Radio in Coari, north of Brazil, is set on fire
The radio station Rádio Nova Coari, in the Brazilian State of Amazonas, was set on fire, in february, 8. The police has no definitive theory explaining the occurred, but does not discharge the possibility of a politically motivated assault connected with supporters from the mayor in office, Arnaldo Mituoso.
According to João Moraes, from Coari´s police force, two armed men wearing motorcycle helmets with dark visors, arrived at the scene around 9h. In sequence, they submitted the radio´s employees and burned down the station´s only studio. The fire spread throughout the whole building. Nevertheless, no one was harmed. Before leaving the site, one of the criminals is reported to have said “let´s go, we did our job”.
It is the third assault the radio is victim of, according to it´s owner and director-president, Aguinaldo Medes. The station had already survived two other fires, in august and September, 2009.
Mendes suspects the action was motivated by reports the radio had been making regarding the Arnaldo Mituoso´s administration. “I cannot accuse anyone, but every time a subject regarding the administration is mentioned, someone tried to set [the radio on] fire”, he says. The radio owner also mentions three law suits the mayor holds against the station.
Recently, the station was covering the delay in the payment of the town´s employees, and announced the debut of a new show that would approach politics “more vehemently”, explains the director-president.
The mayor´s office representative in Manaus, Wilson Cavalcanti, in an interview to the newspaper A Crítica, denies any participation from the mayor with the incident. Antônio Maduro, the officer in Charge of Coari´s Police force, affirms there is no concrete evidence that the assault has any connection with the mayor and that the investigations continue.
