Anchorman quits live on public television in Brazil and denounces censorship
“I can lose my job, but I keep my dignity”. With these words, Paulo Beringhs finished his program on October 20th. Minutes before that, he explained to the viewers that the journalism on TV Brasil Central was no longer independent. The images are on youtube, here:
The channel is supported by the state of Goiás and, according to the journalist, is used for political proposals. He explained that his idea was to interview the two candidates running for governor of Goiás, Marconi Perillo (PSDB) and Iris Rezende (PMDB). This last one, who is supported by the current governor of the state and by the president Lula, did not attend to the program the night he was invited.
For that reason, the journalist says on the video, the directors of the public television denied the participation of Iris Rezende, the opposition candidate, scheduled to the next day.
On Thursday, 21st, the word “Beringhs” was already a twitter global trend topic. Many users of the social network denounced, however, that the journalist was affiliated to the opposition party (PSDB), and his reaction was meant to help Rezende. Beringhs said to journalists interested on his story that he had abandoned the party three years ago.
