Abraji regrets death of cameraman who worked for Bandeirantes in Rio de Janeiro

The cameraman Gelson Domingos, 46, from TV Band, died on Sunday morning (6.nov.2011) after being shot in the chest while covering a police operation in the slum of Antares, Santa Cruz, on the west side of Rio.

The Bandeirantes group declared in a statement that the professional wore a bulletproof vest. The bullet, however, came out of a rifle - and went through protection.

Abraji mourns the death of the cameraman and reiterates the need for training for all professionals involved in the coverage of conflict situations. News organizations have the duty to provide every possible means to ensure the safety of its journalists.

Abraji urges the authorities in Rio de Janeiro to solve the crime and hopes that the guilty be punished according to Brazilian law.
